#TuesdayTips – How to conduct a news interview with Amelia Schafer

Junior Amelia Schafer is the News Editor for The Simpsonian, Simpson College’s student-run newspaper. She’s conducted plenty of interviews during her time working for The Simpsonian. Here are some of her tips:

Introduce Yourself

First, make sure to state that you are a journalist and where this will be published. It’s important that you don’t potentially mislead your source.

Record the Interview

Make sure to ask your source before recording if you’re going to tape record. I would recommend audio recording your interviews so that later when you write your article you can make sure that you have the most accurate quotes possible.

Cover the 5 W’s and H

Try to get the who, what, when, where, why and how.

Try Ice Breakers

Sometimes, it’s also good to get an ice breaker before you start. You can get better, more genuine answers out of a source this way.

Ask In-Depth Questions

Try not to ask questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no. That way, your source has to give you a more in-depth answer.

Come Prepared

Try to plan your questions beforehand, but sometimes you’re going to have to make up additional questions on the fly so be prepared for that.
