Simpson students in Multimedia Communication heard from national-media heavyweights and picked up ideas for improving their work earlier this month at the National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C.

Students attended from Simpson’s campus newspaper, The Simpsonian, along with KSTM-FM radio and ID student magazine.

“We picked up some tips for our reporting and writing,” senior political science and public relations major Devon Wood said.

Among those speaking at the convention were Washington Post executive editor Marty Baron, NPR legal correspondent Nina Totenberg, and CNN White House correspondent Abby Phillip.

“Simpson students are used to mixing with some of the top names in journalism,” said Professor Brian Steffen, who took the group of 18 students to the conference. “But this group got great advice from some of the biggest names in the business. It was really a huge moment for them.”

Students had a flexible schedule in Washington, attending keynotes talks by Baron, Totenberg and Phillip, while also sitting in on smaller workshops.

They also had free time to explore the city between session, with some taking in the Washington Nationals’ parade celebrating the team’s World Series championship and others attending a Washington Wizards’ NBA game.

Wood said she gained tips and tricks on reporting and writing.

“We got to hear from some of the most renowned journalists in the United States,” she said, “and it was neat to see that a lot of them started with their college newspapers.”

Simpson Student Media covered the bulk of the cost of attendance, but students had to pay a fee to attend along with covering the cost of meals and extra activities.

“I think it’s an awesome opportunity we got, being someone who interned in D.C.,” Wood said. “It can be a really expensive city.”

For some of the students, the journey to Washington is only their first of the academic year. Steffen will be taking a group back to the capital city during May Term 2020 to visit with media and communication professionals.

The 2020 National College Media Convention will be in Atlanta.
