Simpson PRSSA and the Career Development Office hosted a networking event for communications and arts fields yesterday in Black Box.
Six Des Moines metro companies including Trilix, Wellmark, Des Moines Metro Opera, Blue Compass, Two Rivers Marketing and Applied Art & Technology met with students seeking internships and employment after Simpson.
Attendees had the chance to talk with company representatives and learn more about their fields and the job market.
Senior and public relations major Johanna Beierle thought the event was a great way to get her foot in the door.
It was great to be able to talk to all the employers in small groups, because I got to hear about their work and also express what I am looking for in a job, “Beierle said. “Hopefully when there are job openings, they will remember me and my qualifications.”
For students that aren’t as close to graduation, the event was great for seeing future opportunities, like Baillee Furst, a junior studying public relations and English.
“I might not be looking for a job until next spring, but the more I can meet with employees of companies I want to work for, the more familiar they will be with me and I will be with them,” Furst said.
Bobbi Sullivan, director of Career Development, created the networking event series to expose students to the job market.
“We wanted to bring students and employers together, allowing students to connect with professionals in their fields of interest, learn about area employers and practice their networking skills,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan says they will continue to provide networking opportunities to students in many fields. They plan to hold a human services networking event in April.
